Technical Analysis - Four Hidden Stocks With Horsepower

By Alan Farley 10/28/09 - 12:03 PM EDT

What's the best time to add exposure, given the current downturn? My advice is to watch the calendar, because the next options expiration, starting on Nov. 15, signals the start of highly positive end-of-year seasonality that will continue into mid December. It makes sense to use that favorable period to open new positions and to add to winners.

Cramer's 'Mad Money' Recap: Batten Down the Hatches

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- "Sometimes huge moves in few stocks can signal which ways the market's headed," Jim Cramer told the viewers of his "Mad Money" TV show Wednesday.

He said the key to understanding the markets is to learn what the big movers are signaling.

Case in point, Panera Bread (PNRA Quote), which was up 7% today on a strong quarter as consumers trade up from fast food to better food, along with heavy equipment maker SPX Corp (SPW Quote), which was down sharply on falling new home starts.

To the novice investor, the moves in these two stocks may not seem important. But Cramer said to him, they're signaling that the consumer economy is good, but the industrial economy is not only bad, but may be getting worse.

Cramer said investors are right to worry that a new leg lower may have come to the markets. More...

Kass: My 'Fast Money' Recap

10/28/09 - 11:30 AM EDT

Last night, I did an interview with Melissa Lee and CNBC's "Fast Money" team, and I had a lot of fun doing it.

Here is the tape of the segment.

Melissa started by referencing my generational bottom call back in March and asked where do we go from here? I said that I am sticking to the call. I don't believe that we will see 666 on the S&P 500 again in our lifetime or certainly not before Karen Finerman's two sets of twins give her grandchildren! We have achieved my precise S&P March objective of 1,050-1,070, which seemed an insanely ambitious target back then. (Not surprisingly, we recently overshot that target to the upside last week.)

That said, I mentioned that I have gotten progressively more bearish in recent months. That view has been premature. More ...

Motorola's Droid Launch Impresses

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- If Motorola (MOT Quote) had a make or break moment, this might be it.

The future of Motorola's phone business rides on the Droid, Motorola's best new phone, powered by Google's (GOOG Quote) Android software and sold exclusively by Verizon (VZ Quote), the nation's largest wireless player.
Motorola and Verizon introduced the Droid Wednesday at a New York City press conference. The initial takeaway: Ladies and gentlemen, we may have a winner.

Young, powerful - and they're hiring!

These rising stars from Fortune's 40 under 40 list have great jobs to fill. What are they looking for and how can you impress them? More

27. Tony Hsieh

CEO, Zappos.com
Age: 35
Marital status: Single
Highest Education: Bachelor's degree

Hsieh ran a pizza business at Harvard and sold his first company, ad network LinkExchange, to Microsoft for $265 million at age 24. He joined online shoe bazaar Zappos as a consultant and investor in 1999; the next year he became CEO.

He's grown it from $1.6 million in sales to $1 billion, largely by encouraging fierce customer loyalty (Zappos has free, eerily fast shipping both ways). In July, Amazon said it would acquire it for $850 million.

Test of faith: He offers $2,000 to any new recruit to leave the company during training to weed out the half-hearted.

The server virtualization market continues to shift towards the use of paid hypervisors

IDC also adds that 16.5% of all new servers shipped in the second quarter of 2009 were virtualized, an increase from 14.5% in second quarter of 2008. However, actual shipments decreased 21% year over year to 246,000 physical servers in 2Q09.

Even more interestingly, IDC reports the OEMs market share in the virtualization industry:

  1. HP - 36% (shipments declined 18% year over year in 2Q09 but grew 1% sequentially)
  2. Dell - Not Disclosed (market share growth equal to 9% over first quarter 2009)
  3. IBM - 15%

Cramer's 'Mad Money' Recap: Cisco Gets It (Final)

Cramer's 'Mad Money' Recap: Cisco Gets It (Final)

By Scott Rutt 10/13/09 - 06:51 PM EDT

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- "Today, everyone was focused on earnings and I think that's terrific," Jim Cramer told the viewers of his "Mad Money" TV show Tuesday.

But he reminded viewers that there are multiple ways to make money in the markets, one of which is sticking with the colossal themes that are working, such as his "mobile Internet tsunami."

Cramer said his thesis was once again proven by today's announcement that networking giant Cisco (CSCO Quote), which he also owns for his Action Alerts PLUS portfolio, is buying Starent Networks (STAR Quote), whose technology is at the heart of the mobile Internet for a 20% premium. How strong are the mobile Internet stocks? He said both stocks rose on the news.

EMC - ON Magazine - Cloudy, but Clear Sailing Ahead

What sets the cloud apart

The experiences of early adopters of cloud computing such as BIDMC, the NBC, and Hill AFB highlight the important differences between where IT has been and where it is going:

  • A cloud is built differently from traditional IT environments—it uses flexible pools of resources, rather than fixed allocations.
  • A cloud is operated differently from traditional IT environments—users are put in charge of IT resources using low- or zero-touch operational models.
  • A cloud is consumed differently—usually, there's a chargeback model that's convenient for the end users, such as metered billing.

These early adopters also prove that the compelling benefits of cloud computing guarantee that it will become the dominant model of IT deployment in the future.

A Brocade Buy Sensible for H-P

SAN JOSE, Calif. (TheStreet) -- With acquisition talk again swirling around Brocade(BRCD Quote), the storage specialist would be an attractive target for Hewlett-Packard(HPQ Quote).

The Wall Street Journal reported that, in addition to H-P, Oracle(ORCL Quote) is also considering a purchase, but the paper said no deal is imminent. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal reported that Brocade could eventually decide not to complete a sale.

Brocade is certainly an appealing proposition that could spell upside for H-P investors. The storage networking firm struck a bullish tone on its recent analyst day, raising its 2010 revenue outlook, and has become something of an analyst darling.
