It is not just the HP-3Com deal that is worrying Cisco, the networking Goliath. In a recent analyst meeting, Cisco CEO John Chambers conceded that over the past 12 months, Cisco has lost market share in both routing and switching, its core franchises. In the niche area of application delivery controllers (ADC), F5 overtook Cisco in the second quarter while Alcatel-Lucent is poaching market share from Cisco in the edge router market. Let’s take a closer look at the changing dynamics in the networking sector.

UPDATED Dec 8th, 2:45pm EST – clarification on VCE support model.
Well – it’s been a busy month since the VMware, Cisco, EMC Virtual Compute Environment coalition launch. Customer reaction has been universally positive in my view, with the only critique being pressure for more details.
If you’re a VMware, Cisco, or EMC employee, or a VCE partner – the official Required/Recommended Bill of Materials (BoM) for the Type 1 (mid-range unified design) and Type 2 (enterprise NAS + block scale-out design) have been published. You can get the BoM by using the VCE portal (www.vceportal.com) and registering the opportunity, or by directly reaching out to the VCE Solutions Support Team or SST (which part of my team is part of) – though if you use the VCE portal, the SST gets engaged automatically.

The VCE Coalition: Redrawing The Landscape
The amount of R+D required to build these next-generation fully virtualized stacks is mind-bending. Combine the targeted R+D from VMware, Cisco and EMC, and you've got literally billions of IT infrastructure R+D dollars to go invest.
More importantly, that money can be spent efficiently. ll three VCE companies are relatively legacy-free in their approach. All three are really, really good at what they do. It's a clean picture - all about Intel, VMware and supporting technologies.

Re: E20-517 Symmetrix Solutions Specialist Exam for Storage Administrators (available August 28, 2009)
Hello,
I understand how difficult it is right now to get funding for training and certification. Preparing for a Specialist level exam does require both education and experience. One thing I can offer you is a full exam description. That will help you to understand what is on the certification exam, and what you might need to spend time learning. Please be careful, though, not to order study or exam prep materials from anyone except EMC as it may invalidate any credential that you receive.
We also have a practice test for this exam. We recommend taking the practice exam once, reviewing the items you missed, and focusing additional learning there. Passing the practice test isn't a guarantee that you'll pass the exam, but it gives you one indicator.
You can find the exam description and practice test here.
There is a ValPak available, offering an instructor-led or LIVE (remote) class and four eLearning courses to get you fully prepared. I know the cost is an issue for you/your company, but here's the link just in case.
Please let me know if I've helped.

Cramer's 'Mad Money' Recap: Batten Down the Hatches
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- "Sometimes huge moves in few stocks can signal which ways the market's headed," Jim Cramer told the viewers of his "Mad Money" TV show Wednesday.
He said the key to understanding the markets is to learn what the big movers are signaling.
Case in point, Panera Bread (PNRA Quote), which was up 7% today on a strong quarter as consumers trade up from fast food to better food, along with heavy equipment maker SPX Corp (SPW Quote), which was down sharply on falling new home starts.
To the novice investor, the moves in these two stocks may not seem important. But Cramer said to him, they're signaling that the consumer economy is good, but the industrial economy is not only bad, but may be getting worse.
Cramer said investors are right to worry that a new leg lower may have come to the markets. More...

Melissa started by referencing my generational bottom call back in March and asked where do we go from here? I said that I am sticking to the call. I don't believe that we will see 666 on the S&P 500 again in our lifetime or certainly not before Karen Finerman's two sets of twins give her grandchildren! We have achieved my precise S&P March objective of 1,050-1,070, which seemed an insanely ambitious target back then. (Not surprisingly, we recently overshot that target to the upside last week.)
That said, I mentioned that I have gotten progressively more bearish in recent months. That view has been premature. More ...

Hsieh ran a pizza business at Harvard and sold his first company, ad network LinkExchange, to Microsoft for $265 million at age 24. He joined online shoe bazaar Zappos as a consultant and investor in 1999; the next year he became CEO.

What sets the cloud apart
The experiences of early adopters of cloud computing such as BIDMC, the NBC, and Hill AFB highlight the important differences between where IT has been and where it is going:
- A cloud is built differently from traditional IT environments—it uses flexible pools of resources, rather than fixed allocations.
- A cloud is operated differently from traditional IT environments—users are put in charge of IT resources using low- or zero-touch operational models.
- A cloud is consumed differently—usually, there's a chargeback model that's convenient for the end users, such as metered billing.
These early adopters also prove that the compelling benefits of cloud computing guarantee that it will become the dominant model of IT deployment in the future.

A Brocade Buy Sensible for H-P
SAN JOSE, Calif. (TheStreet) -- With acquisition talk again swirling around Brocade(BRCD Quote), the storage specialist would be an attractive target for Hewlett-Packard(HPQ Quote).
The Wall Street Journal reported that, in addition to H-P, Oracle(ORCL Quote) is also considering a purchase, but the paper said no deal is imminent. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal reported that Brocade could eventually decide not to complete a sale.Brocade is certainly an appealing proposition that could spell upside for H-P investors. The storage networking firm struck a bullish tone on its recent analyst day, raising its 2010 revenue outlook, and has become something of an analyst darling.
